All The Small Things
Exhibition Design

Even the smallest artifacts can tell big stories. The massive collection of the UWF Historic Trust is made up of hundreds of thousands of individual objects. The idea to display a selection of the smallest of them came from the curiosity the staff experienced opening the “small objects drawers” in the collection storage area. We wanted to bring a bit of that wonder and density of objects to the visitors. As an off-hand idea, it grew into a logistical circus. More objects meant more cases, and more mounts. As we developed the idea, we looked to our own homes’ curiosity cabinets, IKEA’s Billy Bookcase. Using the modular design as a structure, we were able to make use of the grid of sections in a delightful way. Each shelf was treated as its own case, getting a group of objects, graphics, and sometimes a group mounting solution.
